Discernment Counseling: Is This the Best Approach to Take?

Shannon M. Duffy, MFT, LCPC

When contemplating couples therapy, many potential clients view this as a final attempt to make their relationship work. It can certainly feel that way., However, discernment counseling can also serve as a structured space to gain clarity about whether to continue or end the relationship in a respectful and collaborative way.

Many people find themselves asking, “Is this approach better than traditional couples therapy? Do I need a therapist who specializes in discernment counseling to see results? Is this only for married couples, or can anyone in a relationship benefit?”

Discernment counseling is designed for couples who feel uncertain about their future together. It helps both partners explore their feelings and goals honestly, without the immediate pressure to repair the relationship.

In this article, we will address the most common questions and explain how discernment counseling works, and how it might help you find clarity in your relationship decisions.

What Is Discernment Counseling?

Discernment counseling is a form of therapy specifically focused on helping partners determine whether they want to stay in their relationship, separate, or move towards ending their partnership. This approach can be especially beneficial for couples who are on the brink of divorce or a breakup and are feeling uncertain or conflicted about what they truly want.

Acknowledging and accepting ambivalence about the relationship’s future is often what leads couples to seek discernment counseling. Common situations may include infidelity, loss of emotional connection, or uncertainty about continuing couples therapy when one or both partners feel unsure.

It is important to understand that divorce is not considered a failure in discernment counseling. Instead, the main goal is to help both individuals gain clarity and learn from the relationship, whether that insight leads to reconciliation or a respectful separation.

What To Expect During Discernment Counseling

Here is a typical approach to discernment counseling, which is a short-term form of therapy with a specialized focus on decision-making and clarity. The process usually lasts between one and five sessions, often including extended couple sessions that may last up to two hours each. In some cases, individual sessions are included to allow each partner to safely explore personal feelings before returning to joint sessions for collaborative decision-making.

It is important for both partners to share the goal of finding clarity and confidence about the direction for their relationship. This is achieved through a deeper understanding of what has happened between them and an honest recognition of each partner’s contributions.

Because discernment counseling is short-term, there are typically three possible outcomes that are discussed. The couple may choose to stay together as things are, move toward separation or divorce, or commit to couples therapy for at least six months to see if the relationship can be strengthened through focused personal growth. If this couple chooses to enter therapy, divorce or separation is not considered during that period, both partners are encouraged to give their full effort to the process.

How to Choose a Discernment Therapist

Many couples, family, and marriage therapists receive training in discernment counseling. You can look for those who are certified discernment counselors to ensure you are working with someone who has specialized expertise. The benefit of working with a qualified discernment counselor is that if ending the relationship becomes the decision, they can offer valuable resources for addressing sensitive matters such as children, finances, and the division of assets.

This process can bring up significant emotional distress, and those challenging feelings can be more manageable with the support of an experienced professional. A relationship impasse can occur at any time under various circumstances, making discernment counseling an appropriate choice for many couples. This form of therapy provides clarity, insight, and direction to help individuals make the best possible decision for themselves and their relationship.

Even if you feel you have explored all other options, discernment counseling can help you gain the closure and confidence that every concern has been addressed. Being mindful and present throughout this short-term process can also help couples stay aligned and hopeful about their future, whether they continue together or part ways.

Ideally, at the end of the day, it is key to feel more grounded in your decision-making process, supported by professional guidance that encourages personal growth and emotional balance.
