Potential Signs Of Eating Disorders

Everyone is different and symptoms of one mental illness could overlap with other disorders. However, some signs of an eating disorder are more specific and can include:

  • Preoccupation with eating and weight
  • Abnormal eating habits including restricting food or overeating
  • Low, unhealthy body weight
  • Lack of control when eating
  • Purging behaviors (vomiting, excessive exercise, etc.)
  • Intense negative feelings about one’s body

This is not an all-inclusive list and is just a few symptoms that are very specific to eating disorders and could heavily suggest it is time to talk to a professional about improving your eating habits and mental health regarding body image.

Our team of therapists at Symmetry Counseling in Texas are here to help and specialize in eating disorders and body image issues.

Types Of Eating Disorders

We work with all kinds of eating disorders and each one presents itself differently. Some of these disorders include:

  • Anorexia Nervosa - a common obsessive preoccupation with weight loss and restrictive eating. People with Anorexia tend to weigh themselves frequently and exercise excessively. People with Anorexia can suffer from absent or irregular menstruation, vitamin/mineral deficiency, and hair loss.
  • Bulimia Nervosa - This disorder is typically a cycle of binge eating followed by purging. The main difference between Bulimia symptoms and Anorexia is that Anorexia involves restrictive food intake whereas Bulimia usually involves large food intake with the addition of purging.
