Teletherapy Available Statewide in Illinois
In-Person & Teletherapy in Chicago
Meet virtually from anywhere in Illinois, or choose in-person sessions in Chicago. For teletherapy, you'll meet the same licensed therapists on a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform.
In-person counseling in Chicago
Our Illinois practice is based in the Loop, at 1 North LaSalle Street, Suite 1450. For a lot of the people we see, that location is the thing that makes therapy possible at all — an appointment before work, over a lunch hour, or on the way home, without building an evening around a cross-town drive.
The office sits within a few minutes' walk of the Washington/Wells and Clark/Lake stations, which between them cover the Brown, Orange, Purple, Pink, Green and Blue lines, and it's a short walk from both Ogilvie and Union Station for anyone coming in on Metra.
Online counseling anywhere in Illinois
If you're outside Chicago, or the Loop simply isn't practical, online counseling covers the whole state. Rockford, Peoria, Springfield, Champaign, the collar counties — if you're in Illinois, you can work with an Illinois-licensed counselor.
Sessions run over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You need a private space and an internet connection; nothing else. The session itself works the same way an in-person one does.
Online counseling tends to suit people whose schedules leave no room for travel, people for whom getting to an office is difficult, and anyone who travels regularly and doesn't want a gap in their sessions. It's also simply what some people prefer, which is reason enough.
One practical rule worth knowing: you need to be physically located in Illinois during your session, because your counselor is licensed here. That's a licensing requirement rather than our policy, and it applies to every practice.
Choosing between in person and online
You don't have to decide once and stick with it. A lot of our Illinois clients mix the two — in person when the schedule allows, video when it doesn't, or when there's travel, weather, or a sick child at home. You can change how you meet as your circumstances change, without changing counselor.
What working with a Chicago counselor looks like
Most people start with an individual counseling appointment. The first session is mostly conversation — what brought you in, what you've already tried, and what you want to be different. There's no expectation that you arrive with it all worked out, or that you know what kind of therapy you need.
From there, you and your counselor decide together what a reasonable rhythm looks like. Some people come weekly for a stretch and taper. Others come every other week around a specific situation. That's a conversation, not a policy.
Insurance and payment in Illinois
We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare and Medicare for Illinois clients.
Accepting a carrier isn't the same as every plan under that carrier covering the same things, so it's worth checking your specific benefits before you start. If you're not sure what your plan covers, tell us who you're insured with and we can look at it with you rather than leaving you to decode it alone.
Most plans that cover in-person sessions cover online sessions the same way, though it's worth confirming with your own policy. If you're paying out of pocket, or your plan doesn't cover the service you're after, say so early — it's a normal conversation and it's better had at the start than three sessions in.
Getting started
If you're looking for a therapist in Chicago, or online anywhere in Illinois, the first step is a short conversation about what you're dealing with. You can choose your counselor or we can match you to one based on what you're facing.
The most important step is to get matched to the right therapist or counselor for your situation. This is what makes Symmetry the trusted choice.
Feeling stuck, low, or like nothing quite lands the way it used to can wear you down over time. We help clients understand what's driving it and build a path back to feeling like themselves.
Racing thoughts, constant worry, or a body that won't relax can make daily life exhausting. We work with clients to manage anxiety so it stops running the show.
Difficult experiences can stay with us long after they happen, showing up in ways that are hard to explain. Our therapists specialize in helping clients process trauma at a pace that feels safe.
Loss can reshape everything, and there's no timeline for how long it takes to adjust. We support clients through grief in all its forms, whenever they're ready to talk.
Navigating shifts in mood and energy takes more than willpower alone. We help clients build stability and develop tools that fit their day-to-day life.
When frustration boils over or feels hard to control, it can strain relationships and peace of mind. We help clients understand their triggers and respond in healthier ways.
Intrusive thoughts and compulsions can feel exhausting and hard to talk about. Our therapists have experience helping clients loosen OCD's grip and regain a sense of control.
Whether it's work, family, or just everyday life piling up, chronic stress takes a toll on both mind and body. We help clients find real relief and build sustainable coping strategies.
