Psychiatric Medication Management in Illinois

For Illinois residents only

Therapy gets a lot of people where they need to go. For some, there comes a point where it's worth asking whether medication should be part of the plan too.

If you live in Illinois, that's a conversation you can have here. Symmetry Counseling offers psychiatric medication management with Rachel Johnson, APRN, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who evaluates, prescribes, and manages psychiatric medication.

This service is currently only available to Illinois residents.

What medication management actually involves

It's ongoing evaluation and prescribing support for concerns like anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. The word ongoing is doing real work in that sentence. This isn't one appointment that ends with a prescription and a handshake. It's a working relationship, where someone learns your history, pays attention to how you're actually doing, and adjusts as things change.

It also sits alongside therapy rather than replacing it. Many people do both, with the two kinds of support coordinated so they're pulling in the same direction.

And not every evaluation ends with a prescription. Sometimes the honest answer is that medication isn't the right fit for what you're dealing with. That's a real result of the process, not a wasted appointment.

Common questions

What is psychiatric medication management?

Ongoing evaluation and prescribing support for mental health conditions, provided by a licensed psychiatric provider. It usually works in coordination with therapy rather than in place of it, and it involves regular check-ins over time rather than a single visit.

Do I need to also be in therapy to see a medication management provider?

Not necessarily. Medication management typically works in coordination with therapy, and many people do both, but the right combination depends on what you're dealing with. That's something you and Rachel can work out together, including whether adding therapy makes sense if you aren't in it now.

Is medication management available outside Illinois?

No, not at this time. Rachel is licensed in Illinois only, so this service is limited to Illinois residents.

What happens at the first appointment?

The first appointment is an evaluation. Rachel will ask about your history, what's going on for you now, what brought you in at this particular moment, and what you've already tried. That might be years of therapy, a medication that didn't suit you, or nothing yet. From there, the two of you talk through what might make sense next. Sometimes that means medication. Sometimes it means a different recommendation entirely.

About Rachel Johnson, APRN, PMHNP-BC

Rachel is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She evaluates, prescribes, and manages psychiatric medication for adolescents, adults, and older adults, working with concerns including anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

Her approach is integrative. In practice, that means looking at the whole picture: biological, psychological, social, and lifestyle factors. Two people can arrive with the same diagnosis and need quite different things, and her work starts from that assumption.
